Yard Work Day

Yard Work Day

No doubt about it the Ladies of SoBro are born supervisors and love to be in the thick of any project taking place outside. They are the first to report, getting their nails and beaks dirty if there’s any hope of a grub, worm, or anything tasty to gobble down. Cohort 1 has had opportunities to help Chickie Daddy with his yard projects: deck and fence replacement, flower bed expansions, coop 2.0 construction. Cohort 2 on the other hand? They came after the time of chicken proofing the gardening areas so when Chickie Daddy brought out the shovels and starting moving the chicken proof netting the entire flock was excited!

The Project: Installing a modified French drain along the screened patio to direct the downspout water out of the yard to alleviate the lake that forms in our very uneven backyard.

With Chickie Daddy hard at work digging up the Indiana clay filled soil, the 20’ trench was dug up to the last little section by the fence. The question of do you want the chickens out? was asked and quickly followed by you are sure it’s okay to let the chickens out? With the answer unchanging from a yes, the chickens were released and flocked right to the trench scratching and promptly backfilled several inches along the trench. in resignation he said they could stay out, but that they’d have to stay off the rototiller and shovel as he worked on the last portion.

The girls could not believe their luck! So many worms in the soft soil to kick up? The hardy ground cover Chickie Momma had hoped to save? Just start figuring out what to plant this year because those suckers aren’t coming back despite surviving 2 winters and previous chicken damage.
