Although we’ve been fairly quiet in 2019, all is well and we’re managing to keep warm this historically cold winter, #polarvortex and all. Chickie Daddy has been our hero, making the runs out to the coop with hot bowls of oatmeal and making sure the feeder was filled with food, should the Ladies of SoBro actually leave their straw stuffed hut. Chickie Momma was also spotted out in the yard, at least we think those were her eyes peaking out from all those clothes tapping up the coop at dark with ice falling from the sky.

With several days of cold, cold, weather our fresh Nettie eggs were being color with something other than “bloom.”

We’re talking chicken poop.

Ew, gross. I know, I know but the reality with chickens is we’re often comparing stories on where we tracked it to most recently. At any rate, with the sun shinning today was the day Chickie Momma put all those Instagram videos and pictures to use and filled up the tub for Miss Nettie to take a bath.

Despite thinking that we’d both be incredibly traumatized, Nettie was calm and enjoyed the warm water on those dinosaur toes and let me lather her feathers and attack the matted mess on her backside. Although not thrilled about the blow dry, she clucked softly as her feathers transformed from soaked and matted to light and fluffy. Mid dry, we ventured out to the living room for a quick broccoli snack in the sunshine where she shared the sunny entry way with Rennie, the chihuahua with a worm tail.

When she was finally dry (It takes forever for a chicken to dry!) she headed back out to the muddy coop and gathered her sisters up around the feeder to tell them all about her afternoon adventure.
