Let’s Hear it for the Littles!

Let’s Hear it for the Littles!

Turns out most chickens need that minimum length of day light to still produce eggs. Based on our tracking system, our OGs and Middles have not laid eggs since early November. Team Littles on the other hand? Consistently taking turns laying an egg for their Chickie Parents, still mortified that they may have to purchase eggs. Oh the horror!

(Crowned)  Queen Nettie laid the 400th egg earlier this week, a few days after being the first layer in Coop2.0’s nesting box. She’s taken the lead for lifetime eggs laid within our flock.

Both Littles have so far been able to avoid molting, the time honored mortifying experience most hens go through before the cold snap hits. The coop looks like a pillow fight occurred and turned violent with patches of feathers missing from the others. Ada has been spotted puffing out her feathers next to a near naked neck Gerty (lots of sprouted pen feathers are slowly blossoming).

Update: Ada has joined the hens on strike.
