Meet Miss Mae

Mae “ Hydrogen” Easter Egger

Hatched 5 March 2018

Miss Mae was originally going to be our first hatched chicken, but when first time Chickie Parents make the mistake of visiting chicks being held until there’s enough to bring home for extra brooder warmth, there’s not a chance she was staying for a few more days. Mae was boxed up with her brooder buddy (read more about our “Surprise Chick” Amelia) and like any first time Chickie Parents we scurried on home to get her in the warm brooder.

Mae hasn’t stopped growing since we brought her home! She’s significantly larger than all her sisters and loves spending time outside of the brooder observing everything around her. She loves stretching her wings out, flapping them ever so often to remind us that she can and will get airborne. The awkward phase of feathers growing out and little pieces of chick down floating in the air doesn't seem to slow her down one bit.

Significantly larger than her littlest sisters, she’s been dubbed “Momma Mae” because she allows them to snuggle against her and even hide under her wings. She provides examples of “How to Chicken” like scratching the bedding, digging through the food, and exploring the perches.
